Slender Scotch Burnet Zygaena loti

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Wingspan 25-35 mm.

Restricted to five or six sites on the Hebridean islands of Mull and Ulva, where it inhabits steep grassy slopes and hillocks by the sea. Formerly found on the Scottish mainland near Lochaline and the Morven district of Argyllshire, but not since 1945.

The larvae feed from August to early May on common bird's-foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus, overwintering once or twice as a larva. The adult moths fly during the day in sunshine, from mid-June to early July.
