Wingspan 16-20 mm.

Distributed throughout the British Isles, this species inhabits woodland and copses, and flies in July and August.

The appearance of the adult can vary, with some showing rather more blackish suffusion on the dorsal region.

The larvae feed on the leaves and flowers of elm (Ulmus) or beech (Fagus), living in a slight silken web.
