Scarce Silver Y Syngrapha interrogationis

(Linnaeus, 1758)


Wingspan 34-41 mm.

A moorland species, distributed throughout Scotland and northern England in suitable habitat. It also occurs sparingly in Wales and south-west England, and occasional immigrants appear in the south-east.

The flight period of the adults is from June to August and can be seen flying in the sunshine, though at night it comes to light.

The green and yellow striped larva feeds on heather (Calluna) and bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus).
