Stigmella aceris
(Frey, 1857)
Wingspan 3.7-4.7mm
Formerly rare. Since around 1980 it has increased dramatically and now occurs through central and south-east England.
The larvae mine the leaves of Acer campestre Field Maple and Acer platanoides Norway Maple in two generations during June/July and August/September.
The moth flies during May/June and August and as is usual with Stigmella species is difficult to distinguish from others in the group.
