Pine Hawk-moth Sphinx pinastri - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Pine Hawk-moth Sphinx pinastri

Linnaeus, 1758

Wingspan 65-80 mm.

A fairly nondescript greyish member of the hawk-moths, this species is restricted in Britain to the south and east, but it is quite common in continental Europe.

It inhabits coniferous woodland, where it flies in a single generation during May and June.

The larva, which is rather more colourful than the moth, feeds on the needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris).
