Sorhagenia rhamniella - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Sorhagenia rhamniella

(Zeller, 1839)

Wingspan c.9-10mm.

In common with other British Sorhagenia species, this species needs identifying by reference to the genitalia.

Rather local, it frequents calcareous districts and damper situations in the fens of East Anglia and central southern England. Adults are on the wing between July and August.

The larva feeds on alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus) and buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), in a slight spinning either in the flowers or the terminal shoots.
