Semioscopis avellanella - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Semioscopis avellanella

(Hübner, 1793)

Wingspan 20-26 mm.

Fairly local throughout much of mainland Britain, though absent from some areas, this species is quite similar to S. steinkellneriana, but is generally paler. They also differ slightly in the position of the black markings.

Flying in March and April, the adults are sometimes attracted to light.

The larvae feed inside a folded or rolled leaf of small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata), birch (Betula) or hornbeam (Carpinus).
