Wingspan 43-52 mm.

This attractive moth has a scattered distribution, being commonest on the heaths of south-east England, Cumbria and central Scotland. Elsewhere it is rather local or absent.

It prefers woodland and heathland, where the larvae live on birch (Betula) and bog myrtle (Myrica gale), amongst other plants.

Flying in June and July, the adults are attracted to sugar as well as light.
