Feathered Beauty Peribatodes secundaria

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Wingspan c.38-44 mm.

An immigrant species which is now also resident in parts of Kent, where it was first noticed in 1981. Migrants have turned up in various locations along the south coast, but Kent seems the best place to encounter this species.

It is similar to Willow Beauty (P. rhomboidaria), but the feathered antennae of the male are somewhat broader, and the wings are generally more heavily speckled. There are also differences in the tip of the underside of the forewing.

The foodplants are various coniferous trees, including Norway spruce (Picea abies).
