Large Dark Prominent Notodonta torva

(Hübner, [1803])

Wingspan c. 48mm.

There have been only two records of this European species in Britain. One was bred in the late 19th century from an egg or larva found in Norfolk, and the other more recent record came to light in Sussex in May 1979.

The species resembles a smaller, somewhat plainer Great Prominent.

The larval foodplants are aspen (Populus tremula) and other poplar species.
