Dark Brocade Mniotype adusta

(Esper, 1790)

Wingspan 42-48 mm.

Although quite similar to several related species, this moth can often be identified by the shape of its reniform stigmata, which usually show a triple-toothed appearance on the outer edge. It also has a generally longer-winged appearance than other species.

Scattered throughout Britain, it is generally more common in the northern half of its range, and is on the wing between May and July.

It inhabits heathland, chalky downland and fenland, and further north moorland and upland areas.

The caterpillars feed on a wide range of herbaceous plants and trees, as well as grasses.
