Metzneria neuropterella

(Zeller, 1839)

Wingspan c. 19mm.

A rather local and scarce species occurring in southern and south-east England, although its full distribution is uncertain due to possible confusion with Metzneria aprilella.

Unlike that species, neuropterela doesn't tend to show such bright reddish-orange in the forewing.

The larvae feed in the seedheads of dwarf thistle Cirsium acaule and common knapweed (Centaurea nigra).

Adult moths fly between June and August.
