Seathorn Hawk-moth Hyles hippophaes

(Esper, [1789])

Wingspan c. 70mm.

This species appears on the British list as a result of a supposed vagrant record from Devon in approximately 1857.

The species occurs naturally in southern and eastern Europe, where the larvae feed on sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides).

The adult moths closely resemble Spurge Hawk-moth Hyles euphorbiae, and fly between April and June, sometimes with a second generation in August.
