Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Barred Red Hylaea fasciaria

(Linnaeus, 1758)

Wingspan 27-40 mm.

An inhabitant of coniferous woodland, this species has a green form (ab. prasinaria) in addition to the typical reddish form, which is found occasionally in the south.

Found throughout most of Britain in suitable habitat, it can be reasonably common.

The caterpillars feed on a variety of coniferous trees, including Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies).
