Marsh Mallow Moth Hydraecia osseola - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Marsh Mallow Moth Hydraecia osseola

(Staudinger, 1882)

Wingspan 40-50 mm.

Restricted in Britain to a few scattered localities in Kent and East Sussex, this moth inhabits marshes, fens, river banks and ditches.

It flies in September, and is attracted to light, but doesn't tend to wander far from its foodplant.

The larvae feed on the stems and roots of its namesake plant, marsh-mallow (Althaea officinalis).
