Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Marbled Coronet Hadena confusa

(Hufnagel, 1766)

Wingspan 33-39 mm.

Locally widespread over a large part of the British Isles, the species varies from a very black-and-white form to an almost all brown variety, occurring in Shetland.

The adults fly in May and June, sometimes with a partial second generation in the south-east of England.

Preferring chalky soils and shingle beaches, the larvae feed on the seeds of bladder-campion (Silene vulgaris), sea-campion (S. maritima) and other Silene species.
