Eriocrania sangii

(Wood, 1891)

Wingspan 9-14 mm.

Although stated in the literature as local in Britain (MBGBI), renewed interest in this group in recent years has shown the species to be well distributed and quite common, especially in northern England.

The larva creates a blotch mine in a leaf of birch (Betula), rather like some related species, but unlike the other species, the larva itself is dark grey and is quite distinctive if the mined leaf is held up to the light.

The adults fly in March and April and the leaf mines can be found from the end of March until May.
