Pigmy Footman Eilema pygmaeola

(Doubleday, 1847)

Wingspan 24-28 mm.

Occurring only in several coastal localities of Kent and Norfolk, this is quite a scarce species. Other scattered records are believed to be migrants.

It occupies sand dunes and shingle beaches, and there is a yellowish subspecies pallifrons occurring regularly at Dungeness, Kent.

Flying in July and August, it is readily attracted to light.

Lichens form the main foodstuff of the larvae.
