Cydia strobilella

(Linnaeus, 1758)

Wingspan c.10-15 mm.

Also known as the Spruce Seed Moth, this quite well-marked species is locally distributed in the southern half of England, and in parts of Scotland and Wales, but scarce in between.

As suggested by the vernacular name, the larvae feed in the cones of Norway spruce (Picea abies), feeding on the seeds themselves.

The adults are found during May, flying in the afternoon in their chosen habitat of spruce plantations, but they also come to light.
