Cydia coniferana
Pine Bark Moth

Wingspan c.12 mm.

This species is rather similar in appearance to Cydia conicolana, but tends to have a more distinct whitish blotch on the dorsum, which becomes confluent with the first fascia.

It is reasonably well distributed throughout Britain, occurring in coniferous plantations, where it flies between May and August, with two generations in the south, and just one further north.

The larvae feed under the bark of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Serbian spruce (Picea omorika), and their presence can be betrayed by reddish-brown frass exuding from holes in the bark.
