Cosmopterix zieglerella
(Hübner, [1810])
Wingspan c.10mm.
Occurring in the south-east of England and East Anglia, this member of the very attractive Cosmopterix genus is rather similar to its congeners but the whitish apical line is less distinct in the central portion and there are subtle differences in the white markings towards the tip of the antennae.
The larva feeds on hop (Humulus lupulus), forming a gallery or blotch mine lined with silk, usually around the midrib of a leaf.
In 2009, mines were found on hop in Staffordshire, the first record for the West Midlands area.
Adults fly in June and July and can be attracted to light.
