Coleophora hemerobiella

Wingspan c.14 mm.

One of the more easily identifiable Coleophorids as an adult, having whitish forewings speckled with dark grey and usually an obvious blackish spot at around three-quarters.

The species spends two years as a larva, the first one-and-a-half years in a small pistol-case, and in the second spring building a long straight case which is dark brown and rather distinctive. The larva feeds on hawthorn (Crataegus), apple (Malus) and a number of other Rosaceae.

It occurs locally in the south east of England, and the adults fly during July.
