Cnephasia longana

(Haworth, 1811)

Wingspan c. 15-22mm.

The males of this species have a relatively unmarked slightly speckled buffish forewing, whereas the females have a number of darker brown markings.

Its distribution covers much of England, where it tends to occupy coastal habitats and chalky soil inland. Elsewhere it is found in parts of Wales, but is scarcer in Scotland and Ireland.

The larva feeds on a range of low-growing herbaceous plants, in spun flowers and terminal shoots.

Adults are on the wing in July and August, and come to light, although they can be disturbed easily by day.
