Ringed Carpet Cleora cinctaria
([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)
Wingspan 28-35 mm.
Occurring as two distinct races, the nominate race has its headquarters in the New Forest, Hampshire, but also occurs locally in other southern counties and in Ireland. The subspecies bowesi is generally whiter and greyer, and occurs in scattered locations throughout Scotland.
The preferred habitat is heathland with scattered trees and bushes, and the moths can be found on the wing in April and May.
The larvae feed on a number of plants and trees, including birch (Betula) and bog myrtle (Myrica gale).
