Caryocolum vicinella - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Caryocolum vicinella

(Douglas, 1851)

Wingspan c. 12 mm.

A sea-cliff and coastal species occurring locally around the coasts of England, Wales and parts of Scotland.

It also occurs around parts of the Irish coastline. Its pied appearance makes it a fairly distinctive member of the genus, if well-marked.

The larval foodplant is sea-campion (Silene maritima), feeding in spun shoots and possibly mining leaves when young.

The adult flies from about July to September, and can be attracted to light.
