Caloptilia cuculipennella - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Caloptilia cuculipennella

(Hübner, 1796)

Wingspan c.12 mm.

Although having a fairly wide distribution over much of the British Isles, this is rather a scarce species, and not often encountered.

The larvae initially create a mine on either privet (Ligustrum vulgare) or ash (Fraxinus), and then form two successive cones by rolling a leaf.

Documentation suggests that adults emerge in September, but the Worcester example illustrated was caught in July, perhaps indicating an earlier brood.
