Six-belted Clearwing Bembecia ichneumoniformis

Wingspan 15-21 mm.

Locally distributed in the southern half of Britain, this species inhabits calcareous soils including chalk downland, quarries and sea-cliffs.

The foodplants are bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus) or kidney vetch Anthyllis vulneraria), the larvae feeding in the rootstock.

The day-flying adults are on the wing between June and August.
