Black V Moth Arctornis l-nigrum

Wingspan 35-45 mm.

No longer present in Britain, this immigrant species from continental Europe temporarily established itself on the coast of Essex from 1947 to 1960, but then disappeared. There have been no records since.

Abroad, the species is fairly common in deciduous forest, and flies in June and July.

The caterpillars feed on a variety of trees, including beech (Fagus) and birch (Betula).
