Scarce Brindle Apamea lateritia

(Hufnagel, 1766)

Wingspan c. 42-50mm.

There have been around a dozen records of this sporadic migrant species, which may have been temporarily resident in one location in Essex where several records were noted within a few years between 1985 and 1990.

It occurs widely in Europe and tends to appear on East and South-east coasts, suggesting origins from Northern European countries.

Adult moths are on the wing from June to August and most British records are in July or August.

The larvae feed on the rootstock of various grasses.
