Ancylis upupana

(Treitschke, 1835)

Wingspan c. 15 mm.

A relatively local species, occurring in the south and south-east of England, occupying areas of birch woodland.

The moth is relatively plain dark chestnut-brown, with an orange suffusion around the apex of the forewing revealing dark and light strigulae.

It flies in May and June, and the larvae feed mainly on birch (Betula), but also on elm (Ulmus), spinning a folded leaf or leaves together into a pod. Feeding from within, the larva partly skeletonises the leaves.
