Sand Dart Agrotis ripae

(Hübner, [1823])

Wingspan 32-42 mm.

Very much a maritime species, occupying sand-dunes around the English and Welsh coastline, with additional colonies in eastern Scotland and southern Ireland.

The moths fly at night during June and July and are attracted to both sugar and light.

The nocturnal caterpillars feed on several sand-dune plants, and burrow into the sand during the day.
