Great Dart Agrotis bigramma
(Esper, 1790)
Wingspan 40-48 mm.
A very rare migrant to Britain, with less than 20 records in the last 100 years. The most recent record was an amazing capture of three together in one trap, on St. Agnes, Isles of Scilly on 10 August 1997.
In the Channel Islands it is fairly regular in reasonable numbers.
It resembles a Turnip Moth (A. segetum) in shape and size, but has much more distinct markings.
Abroad, it occurs in southern Europe and North Africa, and feeds on the roots of low plants and grasses.
