Clouded Magpie Abraxas sylvata
(Scopoli, 1763)
Wingspan 35-44 mm.
Local, but widely distributed throughout much of England, Wales, southern Scotland, it also occurs in Ireland.
The adults fly between May and July, when they can be attracted to light, and inhabit woodland, parks and similar habitats.
The foodplants are wych elm (Ulmus glabra) and English elm (U. procera), and the caterpillars are rather distinctive, being marked with longitudinal black and yellow stripes.
