Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

Orange Swift Triodia sylvina

(Linnaeus, 1761)

[Synonyms: Hepialus sylvina]

Wingspan 32-48 mm.

Flying later in the year than the other swifts, from July to September, this species inhabits waste ground, moorland, rough grassland and other wild places. It is fairly common throughout Britain, becoming less frequent in more northern areas.

In common with other members of the genus, the larvae feed on the roots of a variety of plants, and the moth exhibits marked sexual dimorphism, the males being smaller and more brightly coloured than the females.
