Yellow-legged Clearwing Synanthedon vespiformis

(Linnaeus, 1761)

Wingspan 18-20 mm.

Another wasp-mimic, probably overlooked as a result. Distributed over the southern half of England, but nowhere common.

Like other related species, the larvae feed internally on the wood of the foodplant, in this case oak (Quercus).

Flies from May to July during the day.
