Orange-tailed Clearwing Synanthedon andrenaeformis

(Laspeyres, 1801)

Wingspan 18-22 mm.

This species occurs in central southern England, on chalk downland, preferring the edges of woodland.

The adults fly between May and June, but are very difficult to locate.

The larva lives for two years or more, boring into the stems of the wayfaring tree (Viburnum lantana) and guelder rose (V. opulus).
