Stout Dart Spaelotis ravida

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Wingspan c. 45 mm.

A fairly local species, subject to occasional population fluctuations, Stout Dart is resident in southern and central England, occurring less commonly in parts of Northern England, Wales and Scotland.

The adults fly from June until September, though being generally inactive until around August, and occasionally come to light.

The habitat preference is for marshy ground, but the species is also found in gardens. Rarely found in the wild, captive larvae will feed on dandelion (Taraxacum) and dock (Rumex).
