Cousin German Protolampra sobrina

(Duponchel, [1843])

[Synonyms: Paradiarsia sobrina]
Wingspan 34-39 mm.

A rare and local species, restricted to birch woodland in the Highlands of central Scotland.

The adult is dark reddish brown with fairly insignificant markings, and can sometimes show a slight pearly sheen. It flies in July and August and visits both light and sugar.

The caterpillar is brownish with an indistinct pale dorsal line. It feeds nocturnally on bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), heath (Erica) and later on birch (Betula).
