Wingspan 29-34 mm.
Generally distributed throughout mainland Britain, though absent from parts of Wales and the south-west, it also occurs in Ireland.
Quite variable, there are a number of forms ranging from quite plain to more variegated examples.
Inhabiting woodland and heathland, the larval foodplants are birch (Betula) and sallow (Salix).
The moths are on the wing in late July and August.
