The Engrailed Ectropis crepuscularia - Distribution map

Please note that the NBN Gateway map service has been terminated as of 1 April 2017.

As soon as a replacement map service is available, distribution maps will hopefully appear here again.

In the meantime, you can get some idea of distribution from the NBN Atlas website.

The Engrailed Ectropis crepuscularia

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

[Synonyms: E. bistortata]

Wingspan 30-40 mm.

A very variable species, formerly known as two separate species, Engrailed and Small Engrailed (E. bistortata and E. crepuscularia). Recent scientific investigations have revealed that these are actually just one species, now recorded as crepuscularia.

There are two generations, flying in March and April, and then in July and August, but in the northern parts of its range it is single-brooded, flying in April and May.

Frequenting woodland, gardens and other bushy habitats, the species is common in England and Wales, less so in Scotland and Ireland.
