Wingspan 16-20 mm.

An autumn species, flying in August and September, this moth exhibits a number of variations in wing pattern and colour.

The larva feeds on a variety of trees, including oak (Quercus) and hazel (Corylus avellana).

A night-flying species, it is often attracted to light. It is common throughout mainland Britain and Ireland.
