Wingspan 15-18 mm.This species often looks distinctly greyish, rather than ochreous, and has a distinctive resting aspect (among the pugs), with the wings held slightly below the horizontal.
Distributed widely, but locally throughout most of the British Isles, it is a species of coniferous woodland, and flies early in the year, during April and May.
The caterpillars feed on the young shoots or buds of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) or larch (Larix).
