Wingspan 18-22 mm.A scarce but distinctive species which shows a wide variation in appearance, with a number of named forms.
The species has an unusual raised patch of scales, or 'scale-tuft' in the centre of the forewing.
Occurring mainly in southern England, it prefers heavily wooded areas, and flies between August and November, then again from March till May after hibernation.
The larva feeds on a range of rosaceous trees and bushes, including blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) and hawthorn (Crataegus).
