944 Aethes williana

(Brahm, 1791)

Wingspan c. 13mm.

Distributed mainly in the southern half of England, this species flies from May to early August, and occupies dry, sandy or chalky habitats and rough fields or downs.

It can be found on the wing during warm days as well as from early evening to sunset.

The larvae feed on wild carrot (Daucus carota), boring into the lower part of the stem and the roots and feeding within.
