Wingspan 15-25 mm.This distinctive species is distributed over much of Britain, but is scarcer in the northern parts.
Like its close congener, A. hamana, it flies from dusk into the night, and is attracted to light.
The flight period is from May to August.
Its main foodplant is common knapweed (Centaurea nigra).
