Wingspan 37-43 mm.Although it occurs sporadically throughout parts of northern England and Scotland, the major populations are in the New Forest, Hampshire and other southern coastal counties.
The moths fly in July and August, mainly at night, but the males can also be found flying on warm days.
The species' favoured habitats are heathland and downland, and the larval foodplants are mainly heather (Calluna vulgaris) and bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus).
