1725 Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet Xanthorhoe ferrugata

(Clerck, 1759)

Wingspan 18-22 mm.

The most reliable way to separate this species from Red Twin-spot Carpet is to look closely at the whitish line on the inner edge of the dark central band. In this species it shows a distinct 'notch'. However, it also tends to be darker and less 'red'.

Fairly common throughout, the moths fly in May and June, and again in August. Further north there is usually only one brood, in June and July.

The larval diet consists of a variety of low plants.
