Wingspan c.12-15 mm.In Britain this species occurs only in a number of southern and south-eastern counties from Cornwall to East Anglia.
The host foodplants are coniferous trees, in particular maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), larvae feeding in the shoots and flower buds from August and overwintering in this stage.
Adult moths are at large in June and July but are difficult to locate as they hide among the foliage of the host trees. However they can sometimes be attracted to light.
