Wingspan 16-21 mm.A fairly common, and rather variable species, occurring over most of the British Isles, and occupying woodland and scrubby habitats.
Although quite variable in colour, the contrasting dorsal blotch is often present, sometimes darker and other times paler than the ground colour.
It flies in July and August and will come to light.
The larvae feed in a rolled leaf of birch (Betula), hazel (Corylus), sallow (Salix) or occasionally some other species of tree or bush.
