Wingspan 12-16 mm.Superficially similar to A. badiana, this species has however a much more chestnut coloration to the forewing, especially on the fascia extending from the costa.
It is distributed mainly in the southern counties of England, with a few records further north.
A single generation flies in June and July, and the species inhabits woodland, downland and scrubland where the foodplants, buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) and alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus) grow. The larva spins a folded leaf together at the edges and feeds within.
